Ganggangsullae
is a traditional circle dance performed primarily by women in the Jindo region
and was
inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
of Humanity in
2009.
Held
on the night of Chuseok, Korea¡¯s harvest festival, the dance features women
joining hands in a circle
as they sing, dance, and play under the moonlight. It
is a folk performing art that prays for a good harvest and expresses the
strength and solidarity of
women¡¯s
communities. In Jindo, it is characterized by a unique sequence—slow Ganggangsullae, medium-tempo
Ganggangsullae, and fast Ganggangsullae—preserved through generations. As
one of Korea¡¯s most representative traditional group dances, Ganggangsullae
vividly reflects the emotions,
joys, and hardships of women in the past and remains a significant cultural
heritage today.
